Susan Helton manages the day-to-day operations of the S.A.F.E. program and mobile units. She has over 30 years of experience and knowledge that make her uniquely qualified for these tasks. Susan has been active in animal rescue for more than 35 years and has a passion for spay and neuter that began as a teen when she worked for a local veterinarian. Susan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture & Environmental Science from The University of Georgia as well as an Associate Degree of Nursing from Darton State College where she graduated with honors. Her work as the local spay/neuter coordinator for the AHS mobile unit also contributed to her experience and commitment to the S.A.F.E. mission. Susan is married to Billy Helton. She has two sons, Jordan and Drew Elliott and a stepdaughter Haley Helton.

KATE McGOWAN D.V.M.
Medical Director / Veterinarian
Dr. McGowan is the Medical Director and full time Veterinarian for S.A.F.E. She comes to our organization with a wealth of experience. Dr. McGowan is responsible for the care and surgical sterilization of all patients, maintenance of preventive health programs, and development/refinement of medical and anesthesia protocols. She also worked in private practice prior to joining S.A.F.E. She has performed over 12,000 surgeries with zero mortality.
Dr. McGowan is a 2012 magna cum laude graduate of The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine and she also holds a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from The University of Illinois where she graduated with honors.
Dr. McGowan is married to Chris McGowan and they have two sons, Jack and Cash and two stepchildren, Bailey and Atticus.
